MAPUTO PROTOCOL!

Dear colleagues,

Greetings from National Association of Women Organisations in Uganda.
Inspite of the bad memories of the 7/11 bombings, life has to go on
and women's lives have to be improved.

NAWOU congratulates the Maputo Protocol Task Force under the
leadership of Akina Mama who worked tirelessly to have it ratified by
Uganda. This means there are positive results for us in the African
Union meeting in Munyonyo this week.

At the 4th AU Pre-Summit on Gender 19th â€" 21st July 2010 at Munyonyo,
was on the theme; Maternal, Infant and Child Health and Development in
Africa. Free medical services for pregnant women at all levels in
Africa was recommended and will be forwarded to Heads of member
states.

More important the AFRICAN WOMEN'S DECADE 2010 â€" 2010 was on the
agenda. It is an opportunity to build up on Beijing, MDGs, etc.
It is our role to popularise the decade, which will be launched at the
national level (I hope the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social
Development will lead). The Africa/continental launch will be in East
Africa, in Kenya â€" Nairobi October 10 â€" 15,th 2010 under the theme:
Grassroot Approach to Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment.

The struggle goes on! Plan for the decade!
