Dear Reader,
Women of Uganda Network welcomes you to the June
2010 issue of the WOUGNET Update e-Newsletter.
Women of Uganda Network (WOUGNET) is glad to
inform you that we are celebrating 10 years of
empowering women through the use of ICTs. The
10th anniversary celebrations take place on 1st
and 2nd June 2010 which include an exhibition and
symposium in addition to an SMS awareness
campaign which run from 25th to 30th May.
WOUGNET remains optimistic that all her
achievements and innovative use of ICTs will
enhance her mission to promote and support the use of ICTs for Women.
We would like to thank you for your continuous
support and involvement with WOUGNET.

= Ugandan citizen journalists among the top ten
in the e-learning photo competition.

The recently concluded e-Learning Africa 2010
Photo Competition saw two Ugandan citizen
Journalist featuring among the top ten finalist
taking up the 4th and 6th position. The photo
competition aimed at finding out "How ICTs Are
Changing the Way We Live". To know what this has
meant for the African continent and to learn more
about how digital media (mobile phones, the
Internet, computers, radio and the audio-visual)
have changed the lives of the people in Africa
who use them in their day-today work.
= FIT Uganda Limited conducts a baseline survey
on the Apac women entrepreneurship associations

Over the past few months, ILO-WEDGE project held
meetings with its partner organization in order
empower women entrepreneur associations to
increase access to and utilization of market
information for their members through ICT, among
the partner organizations involved was WOUGNET.
FIT Uganda Limited was identified as a service
provider to offer market information with the use
of ICT. FIT Uganda Ltd is a Business Development
Service Provider with expertise in running
Agricultural Market Information Service in the
country under the brand name INFOTRADE.
= FOWODE Leadership Training Camp

Forum for Women in Democracy (FOWODE) invites
young women aged 21 - 25 years who completed
their university or any tertiary institution between 2008 -
2010 and are interested in Leadership to apply
for a Leadership Training camp scheduled for
August 2010. The Camp runs for three weeks and is
residential. Interested Applicants should have
held a leadership position while in school, or
should be interested in leadership. Deadline for application is 14 June 2010.

The Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural
Cooperation ACP-EU (CTA), in collaboration with
FARA, Yam-Pukri, CAFAN, AYF, ANAFE and PAFPNET,
is organizing an essay writing contest on Youth
and ICTs in Agriculture and Rural Development,
aimed at identifying innovative solutions on
challenges faced by youth in agriculture and
rural areas using Information and Communication Technologies.

This is a critical year for Africa as we head
towards the United Nations Summit on the
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), to be held
from 20-22 September 2010 in New York. With only
five years before the MDGs are to be achieved, it
is important that all African stakeholders,
including citizens, review the progress made in
recent years and develop a set of priorities for
engagement and advocacy in Africa, and towards
building a redefined relationship between Africa
and the international community.
#AfricanAgenda2010 was a call to have your say on
Africa's development by Africa Day celebrated 25 May 2010.

= Uganda Civil Society Fair 2010, 28th -30th June 2010

The Uganda Civil Society Fair 2010 is a mode of
interaction that brings people together for a
period of 3 days as a civil participation event.
It involves workshops, interactive displays,
panel discussions, artist interactions and a
networking café. The Fair is being organized as
part of the stock taking of the countryÂ's MDG
campaign and the civil society contribution to
the development process of Uganda.

= Technical Clinic @ WOUGNET Exhibition, 1 - 2 June 2010

WOUGNET is hosting a Technical Clinic at the
WOUGNET clinic that is running from 1 - 2 June
2010. The clinic will provide training on web 2.0
tools and demonstrations of tools and
applications including Linux and handy
applications with the Nokia N-900. WOUGNET has
partnered with the Uganda Linux User Group (LUG),
UConnect and MobileMonday Kampala in order to
provide a variety of information and experiences
from the Technical Clinic. The Exhibition and
Technical Clinic are running at Hotel Africana, Kampala.

= e-learning Africa 2010 photo competition-RESULTS!

We would like to congratulate all Ugandans who
participated in the competition. 5 of the top 10
images submitted came from Uganda, with 2 of the
TOP 10 coming from WOUGNET Staff Members (Ssozi
Javie and Maureen Agena in the 4th and 6th Places
respectively). The TOP 10 photos will be featured
at the 5th International Conference on ICT for
Development, Education and Training at the
Mulungushi International Conference Centre Lusaka, Zambia, May 26-28 2010.

The Citizen Journalism in Africa project (CJA)
was a three-year initiative funded by both Hivos
and the EU. Hivos was working with SANGONet
(South Africa) on this project. The aim of the
project was to increase civil society
organisations' use of and interaction with
various forms of media. This would help them
maximise their communication strategies and
reach. It was hoped that this will strengthen the
organisations' use of media and increase quality
information dissemination capacity using multiple platforms.

the Tech! to End Violence Against Women

As part of our work in Uganda, the APC WNSP and
WOUGNET are calling for proposals for projects
that seek to address the intersection between
violence against women and girls, and/or to stop
violence against women and girls through the
strategic use of information and communication
technologies (ICTs). The deadline for applications is 2nd July 2010.
= Mobile Monday Kampala: m-Health for Mother and Child

A MobileMonday Kampala meeting was hosted by
UNICEF Uganda with a focus on m-Health. The
meeting hosted at their headquarters building on
George Street was held on 31st May. The theme of
the meeting was "MoMo@UNICEF: M-Health for Mother
and Child", and had a panel that included
speakers from UNICEF, the Millenium Village
Project, Text to Change, FINDDiagnostics, the
Malaria Consortium and Makerere's OpenX mobile apps project.

= SAN Project: ACCORD Support Visit to WOUGNET on HIV/AIDS at the Workplace

The SAN project now called HIV/AIDS workplace
policy, a project at ACCORD works with 76 civil
society organisations (CSOs) in Uganda helping
them to integrate and monitor HIV/AIDS in the
work environment. On 14th May 2010 during a two
and a half hour session at WOUGNET, Mr.
Ayebazibwe Ganaafa, project coordinator ACCORD
CSF project, introduced Mr. Nelson Mwesigye who
facilitated the session. Mr. Mwesigye works with
Uganda National Council of Science and Technology
in the area of Malaria, HIV and TB. The session
was internal and meant for WOUGNET staff members.
