= Women & Mobile: A global Opportunity.
http://www.wougnet.org/cms/content/view/487/29/
Women & Mobile: A Global Opportunity is a study on the mobile phone
gender gap in low and middle-income countries. The study report was
launched at the Mobile World Congress by Rob Conway, CEO of the GSM
Association (GSMA), Cherie Blair, Founder of the Cherie Blair
Foundation for Women and Brooke Partridge, CEO of Vital Wave
Consulting. The Mobile World Congress was held in Barcelona, Spain,
from 15 - 18 February 2010.
Mobile phone ownership in low and middle-income countries has
skyrocketed in the past several years. But a woman is still 21% less
likely to own a mobile phone than a man. Closing this gender gap
would bring the benefits of mobile phones to an additional 300
million women. By extending the benefits of mobile phone ownership to
more women, a host of social and economic goals can be advanced.
WOUGNET's work with rural women farmers in Apac District, Northern
Uganda, is among the cases highlighted in the report. With support
from the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation ACP
EU (CTA) and Hivos, WOUGNET has used mobile phones as one of the ICT
tools to enhance access to agricultural information by rural women farmers.
= Internet Point of Presence (POP) for Apac to be functional by 2010
financial year.
http://www.wougnet.org/cms/component/option,com_mamblog/Itemid,83/task,s...
The internet point of presence in Apac district will become
operational by financial year 2010, says Mr Bob Lyazi, the Director
Rural Communication Development Fund of the Uganda Communication
Commission (UCC). This was revealed during the third Lango Forum on
e-Agriculture that took place on the 18th of February 2010 at the
Apac District e-Society Community Hall.
The Lango Forum on e-Agriculture is hosted twice a year in Apac to
sensitize rural women, policy makers and the community at large on
the role of ICTs in agricultural and rural development. It highlights
both the challenges and benefits involved in the application of ICTs.
The Lango Forum is organised by WOUGNET and Kubere Information Center
(KIC) with support from the Technical Center for Agriculture and
Rural Cooperation ACP EU (CTA). Pictures from the Lango Forum are on
the WOUGNET Facebook page at:

= March 2010: Demystifying Some Common Computer Security Myths
http://www.wougnet.org/cms/content/category/12/36/77/
There are some common myths that may influence your online security
practices. Knowing the truth will allow you to make better decisions
about how to protect yourself. There is no one cause for these myths.
They may have been formed because of a lack of information, an
assumption, knowledge of a specific case that was then generalized,
or some other source. While believing these myths may not present a
direct threat, they may cause you to be more lax about your security
habits. If you are not diligent about protecting yourself, you may be
more likely to become a victim of an attack.
This techtip provides information on five common myths.
