Welcome new members,
Beside having our own place on the web now, I think it would be a great idea to get together some time in March to discuss mapping, share experience and just have a good mapping time.
I was thinking to do this over the weekend of 20/21 March.
I normally map on Sunday afternoons, ending with a beer and Porc, but I am very open to other ideas.
We also need to pick a location that would allow for some www.walking-papers.org mapping and real uploading to OSM.
Well, I hope you all subscribe (and reply) and we can meet a month from now, in real life.
rgds,
Reinier
Re: [Mapping Uganda] Mapping Day
Hi Reinier,
Was just looking thru my email for the proposed mapping day and find
that it was last due last weekend? Did it happen, any updates?

Re: [Mapping Uganda] Mapping Day
Hi Milton,
I just set a date and hoped someone would have come up and helped organize.
We found a new office, and are in the process of shifting (and we hired 2 new
people as well that need lots of love), so got a bit swamped.
After we shifted, we can actually host events, so if someone is willing to
assist we could give it another try in a few weeks.

Good Project.
Hi, thanks for the project , I am a GIS/ .NET Software developer. I've had lots of experience working with kml files from google and openstreetmaps in my projects and devices. I also develop custom GIS products for mobile Apps, web and standalone desktop. Incidentally the target market is not uganda since there is low coverage of data. So...with this group, if we can update openstreetmaps, and google maps(using its local office here in kampala), i think we can go miles.
Apparenty, i am developing a silverlight application to track incidents and elections for the upcoming year (2011), but since i am about to complete it, i can be available for help and work. so in case you need someone with my expertise. Just write me a line on samkea [at] gmail [dot] com.
mapping bamboo farms in Luweero and elsewhere
Hello, group. I am actually writing from Washington DC, but my business partner, Paul Ssozi, live in Kampala.
We have a new venture, Gorilla Bond Bamboo, Ltd (Ug), that is establishing bamboo plantings on small farms in Luweero and other places. Paul Ssozi has a Garmin Oregon 550 for mapping these farms. We are the very early stages of the learning curve to develop maps and a data base of pictures that show the growth of each bamboo plant. There is a lot of work to do in the field and also online to interface with both OSM and Google Maps.
We very much appreciate help from any of you who are more experienced in mapping than we are. Maybe one weekend some of you can go with Paul to the bamboo farms.
You can learn more about Gorilla Bond at http://gorillabond.com. The last page of that site links to a Picasa page with geotagged picture of each bamboo plant (spacing ~6 meters) on the first farms we planted. If you can help, please email me at paul [at] gorillabond [dot] com or Paul Ssozi at reduganda [at] gmx [dot] net or call/text either of us at +1 202 370 7916 or +256 (0) 772 544 533 (Ssozi). We are looking forward to getting to know the mapping community in Uganda. There are a lot of interesting things to do
Thanks,
Paul Weatherly
Re: [Mapping Uganda] Mapping Day
Hi,
Firstly, thanks for setting up the group. March 20/21 seems so far, but
I guess we can carry on the discussion online until then. Will introduce
my biker buddies that would also like to contribute to developing maps,
especially if we can get these maps to work with the Garmin GPS devices.
Cheers
Milton
Re: [Mapping Uganda] Mapping Day
Hi Milton,
Good news for you. There is a whole page on OSM data on Garmin in the OSM
wiki:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin
And more good news for your cycle buddies. There is a OSM mashup that shows
heights as well, especially cyclists:
http://opencyclemap.org/?zoom=11&lat=0.29435&lon=32.58711&layers=B000
Have a nice weekend!
