= Strengthening the Use of ICTs to Combat Violence Against Women
http://www.wougnet.org/cms/component/option,com_frontpage/Itemid,1/

Violence against women continues to be widespread
and socially tolerated despite the fact that itÂ's
a human rights violation. Domestic violence
disempowers women and negatively affects womenÂ's
health and productivity sometimes resulting into
death. In addition, the cost to women, their
children, families and communities is a
significant obstacle to reducing poverty,
achieving gender equality and ensuring a peaceful
transition for post-conflict societies. Violence
against women has as its root in the structural
inequalities between men and women that result in
the persistence of power differentials between
the sexes. WomenÂ's subordinate status to men in
many societies, coupled with a general acceptance
of interpersonal violence as a means of resolving
conflict, renders women disproportionately
vulnerable to violence from all levels of
society: individual men, within the family and community, and by the state.

= Why Farmers Should Use Improved Practices of Rearing Indigenous Chicken
http://www.kic.wougnet.org/new/index.php?option=com_content&view=article...

Indigenous Chicken plays an important role in
most rural families in Uganda and Africa at
large. In Uganda, most rural communities have
largely depended on rearing indigenous birds and
Animals for their livelihoods. In groups that
have benefited with support of the Kubere
Information Center (KIC) for instance in the
KoK-Can Ikweri group in Bala Sub-County in Apac
District, the group has succeeded in rearing goats and Chicken for themselves.
Â"We do a number of activities as groups and
individuals but we have particularly succeeded in
rearing goats and Chicken. We now own 31 goats
and 11 indigenous Chicken besides growing crops
and bee keepingÂ" .Says Lillian Okello group
Chairperson during one of the project visit to the group.
Despite increased use of commercial breeds by
large scale producers in Africa, around three
quarters of chickens in the region are indigenous
breeds. In Apac District, the price of indigenous
chicken now range from between 8,000 to 15,000 shillings and on high demand.

= September 2009: How to Administer a Windows PC from Linux.
http://www.wougnet.org/cms/content/view/415/77/

Working in a cross-platform data centre is now
the rule rather than the exception for the vast
majority of administrators, as both Windows and
Linux have made inroads into organisations around
the world. But because the two operating systems
are different, allowing fluid communication
between them can be a challenge. That's where tools like rdesktop comes in.
Rdesktop is a Linux implementation of Remote
Display Protocol (RDP). Windows uses RDP to
connect to other Windows computers via Terminal
Services. With rdesktop, you can open a remote
control session on a Windows NT/2000/XP machine
from a Linux box and perform any function just as
if you were sitting directly in front of it.

Citizen Journalism
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
= WOUGNET Avails Mobile Internet to Citizen Journalists in Uganda
http://www.wougnet.org/cms/component/option,com_mamblog/Itemid,83/task,s...
With Support from Hivos South Africa, WOUGNET
through one of its Projects – Citizen Journalism
in Africa - has equipped citizen journalists with
wireless modems from internet service providers;
Uganda Telecom (UTL) and Mobile Telephone Network
(MTN) to ease their access to internet and
improve on their skills in reporting and writing.
Citizen journalism is a form of citizen media -
where individuals write and or comment on issues
they feel are left out of the mainstream media.
Many issues addressed in citizen journalism tend
to be covered in a superficial way by the
mainstream media. Blogging has become a powerful
and non-expensive tool for non-journalists to share their stories and views.
= CJA blogs on Uganda available via WOUGNET website
Follow the blogs on the Citizen Journalism in
Africa (CJA) website that are focused on Uganda.
The section 'What's New at the CJA Portal:
Uganda' on the WOUGNET website highlights the most recent blogs at:
http://www.wougnet.org/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategor...
Blogs highlighted include:
- Why one must keep records of his or her farm.
- Severe Hunger Hits Acholi Sub-region
- Kampala demonstrators left many with Injuries.
- Children in LUBANGA division disappear due to irresponsible parents
- Defilement on the rise in Apac district.
- Chaos in Kampala, Â"EbimeezaÂ' banned and three radio stations closed.
The Citizen Journalism in Africa project (CJA) is
a three-year initiative funded by both Hivos and
the EU. Hivos is working with SANGONet (South
Africa) on this project. The aim of the project
is to increase civil society organisations' use
of and interaction with various forms of media.
This will help them maximise their communication
strategies and reach. It is hoped that this will
strengthen the organisations' use of media and
increase quality information dissemination capacity using multiple platforms.
= WOUGNET Participates in the 4th Digital Citizen
Indaba at Rhodes Univerity in South Africa
http://www.wougnet.org/cms/index.php
The annual Digital Citizen Indaba (DCI) is a
platform for bloggers, podcasters, vodcasters,
mobile journalists, citizen reporters, new media
practitioners, online industry experts and civil
society representatives, as citizens who try to
empower themselves and their community using new
media technologies. The DCI takes place at Rhodes
University in Grahamstown, South Africa just
before the annual Highway Africa Conference (HA)
in September. The DCI was established after it
was recognised that Highway Africa could do more
to encourage new media take-up by
non-journalists, thereby ensuring that citizens have a (digital) voice too.
