= NAWOU discusses ways of encouraging more young
women to participate in political governance

Culture does not grow old hence the need to
encourage young women to take up leadership. The
question is, as Â'olderÂ' women retire who will take up leadership?
NAWOU in collaboration with the Friedrich Ebert
Foundation carried out a research in two
districts; Kiboga and Luweero to study young
womenÂ's participation in governance issues. This
research was carried out because apparently there
is a small number of young women aged 18 Â 35
years participating in political governance. The
numbers of those participating are not proportional to their population.
= The First Beverley Nambozo Annual Poetry Award For Women

On the 21st August 2009, the first Beverley
Nambozo Annual Poetry Award ceremony was held and
graced with the presence of the Rt. Hon. Rebecca
Kadaga, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of
Uganda, as the Chief Guest. On a beautiful night
out under the open skies, the true stars of the
evening were the poetry gems revealed to the public.
= Isis-WICCE Initiates Southern Sudanese Women Leadership Training

Isis-Women's International Cross Cultural
Exchange (Isis-WICCE) in collaboration with
Totto-Chan Centre for Child Trauma (TCCT) has
started Phase 1 of the training programme for
women leaders in Juba, Southern Sudan. The
training organized under the theme, 'Women's
Leadership in Peace building in Southern Sudan',
will run from the 17th-28th August, 2009 at Heron
Campsite in Juba. Participants include Fifty (50)
women leaders from six states of Central,
Eastern, and Western Equatorial States, as well
as Upper Nile State, Unity State and Western Bahr El Ghazal state.

Sister 2 Sister Talk: Taking a Walk within the
Corridors of Power. This was the focus of Day 3
on 10 July 2009 of the 3rd Women in Political
Party Structures Training organized by Forum for
Women in Democracy (FOWODE) under the Theme:
Â"Dancing to the Tunes of Democracy: Preparing for
Effective Engagement in PoliticsÂ", held in Kampala, Uganda.
The 3rd Women in Political Party Structures
Training was organized by Forum for Women in
Democracy (FOWODE) under the Theme: Â"Dancing to
the Tunes of Democracy: Preparing for Effective
Engagement in PoliticsÂ". The opening of this
exciting 3-day convening organized by FOWODE in
partnership with UNDP raised a lot of interest
among participants. The 3-day convening is aimed
at building capacity among Ugandan women in
politics, with an emphasis on improving skills in
lobbying and advocacy bringing together 30 women
leaders in the 6 major political parties
(National Resistance Movement, Forum for
Democratic Change, Democratic Party, Conservative
Party, JEEMA and Uganda PeopleÂ's Congress). More

= The International Women Tribune Center (IWTC)
strengthens WomenÂ's voices on UN resolutions1325 &1820

The International Women Tribune Center (IWTC) is
promoting and strengthening the women voices in
post conflict areas of Northern Uganda through a
series of radio drama episodes. The organisation
has partnered with local FM stations in Uganda
and womenÂ's organisation in putting into action
the United Nations Security Council
resolutions1325 and 1820 about womenÂ's contribution to peace building.
= RDC lauds KIC & CEWIGO in the fight against Sexual and Gender Based Violence

Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) is one of
the serious issues that the International
community have realised and working to prevent.
The United Nations Security Council Resolution
1325 and 1820 is an international law that
countries of the great Lakes region has committed
to in fighting gender based and sexual violence.
The International Women Tribune Center (IWTC) in
partnership with Center fro Women In Governance
(CEWIGO) and Kubere Information Center (KIC)
organised a focus group discussion on issues of
SGBV on the 24th of July 2009 in Bala Sub County
in Apac District to inform the communities about
both the international laws and national laws
that supports the implementation of the UN
resolutions 1325 and 1820. The discussion also
focuses on raising awareness and building a
concerted effort by all stakeholders in the fight
against sexual and gender based violence.

The annual Digital Citizen Indaba (DCI) is a
platform for bloggers, podcasters, vodcasters,
mobile journalists, citizen reporters, new media
practitioners, online industry experts and civil
society representatives, as citizens who try to
empower themselves and their community using new
media technologies. The DCI takes place at Rhodes
University in Grahamstown, South Africa just
before the annual Highway Africa Conference (HA) in September.

The Citizen Journalism in Africa project (CJA) is
a three-year initiative funded by both Hivos and
the EU. Hivos is working with SANGONet (South
Africa) on this project. The aim of the project
is to increase civil society organisations' use
of and interaction with various forms of media.
This will help them maximise their communication
strategies and reach. It is hoped that this will
strengthen the organisations' use of media and
increase quality information dissemination capacity using multiple platforms.

= UCC discusses the Draft RCDF II Policy for 2009-2014

Following the expiry of the previous 2003Â2008
policy, UCC has been developing a new RCDF policy
for 2009-2014. A stakeholders' workshop was
organized on 30th July 2009 to discuss the draft
policy for RCDF II at Imperial Royale Hotel,
Kampala. The second phase of the rural
communications development policy (RCDP-II),
while continuing to address the broad underlying
issues of underserved areas, will particularly
focus on three aspects that are key for the
development of Uganda as an information society.

= Female Youths are sensitised about becoming
Actors in Bridging the Gender Digital Divide

The second in a series of Gender and ICT youth
camps was held in Western Uganda for a period of
three days from 26th-28th June 2009 at Maanji
Memorial School, Mbarara town. The first camp was
held in Eastern Uganda (Mbale) in April 2009
while the next will be held in Northern Uganda (Lira).
= CICEWA Discusses Current Telecom Reforms and
Develops National and Regional Advocacy Plans

The Kenya ICT Action Network (KICTANet) in
collaboration with the Association for
Progressive Communications (APC) organized a
CICEWA East Africa research and advocacy workshop
that was held on 25th - 28th May 2009 at Lenana
Conference Centre in Nairobi, Kenya.
The workshop was part of the Communication for
influence; Linking advocacy, dissemination and
research by building ICTD networks in Central,
East and West Africa (CICEWA) project supported
by the International Development and Research
Centre (IDRC). Seven CICEWA East Africa national
networks in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda
had conducted research to identify obstacles to
universal affordable access to broadband ICT and
this was an opportunity for the network
researchers to submit their findings, which paved
way for discussions on linking these findings to support advocacy activities.

= New Approach for WOUGNET mailing lists
In May 2009, WOUGNET transferred all mailing
lists to a new hosting service - Pamoya - a
social networking platform hosted and run inside
Uganda. While Pamoya is currently in active beta
mode, it offers the opportunity for women and
women organisations to be able to strategically
and innovatively use ICTs for sustainable
